Extreme Temperatures in the Antarctic

چکیده
Abstract We present the first Antarctic-wide analysis of extreme near-surface air temperatures based on data collected up to end 2019 as part synoptic meteorological observing programs. consider at 17 stations Antarctic continent and nearby sub-Antarctic islands. examine frequency distributions highest lowest individual observed. The variability trends in number were examined via mean daily computed from 0000, 0600, 1200, 1800 UTC observations, with thresholds for warm cold days taken 5th 95th percentiles. five Peninsula region all experienced a statistically significant increase ( p < 0.01) high late-twentieth-century their records, although extremes decreased subsequent years. For period after 1979 we investigate background events using ECMWF interim reanalysis (ERA-Interim) fields. majority record recorded passage masses over orography, being warmed by foehn effect. At some coastal East Antarctica potential temperature descended plateau, resulting an mass 5°–7°C warmer than maritime air. Record low observed during winters positive sea ice anomalies Bellingshausen Weddell Seas.

Trends in Extreme U.S. Temperatures
This paper develops trend estimation techniques for monthly maximum and minimum temperature time series observed in the 48 conterminous United States over the last century. While most scientists concur that this region has warmed on aggregate, there is no a priori reason to believe that temporal trends in extremes and averages will exhibit the same patterns. Indeed, underminor regularity condit...
متن کاملExtreme temperatures and violence
In his book Civilization and Climate, Ellsworth Huntington (1876–1947) noted1 that “Almost any American or European who has travelled or resided within the tropics will confess that he has occasionally flown into a passion, and perhaps used physical violence, under circumstances which at home would merely have made him vexed.” This begs the question — why is there no violent conflict when sever...
متن کاملHall Sensors for Extreme Temperatures
We report on the preparation of the first complete extreme temperature Hall sensor. This means that the extreme-temperature magnetic sensitive semiconductor structure is built-in an extreme-temperature package especially designed for that purpose. The working temperature range of the sensor extends from -270 °C to +300 °C. The extreme-temperature Hall-sensor active element is a heavily n-doped ...
متن کاملAntarctic temperatures over the past two centuries from ice cores
[1] We present a reconstruction of Antarctic mean surface temperatures over the past two centuries based on water stable isotope records from high-resolution, precisely dated ice cores. Both instrumental and reconstructed temperatures indicate large interannual to decadal scale variability, with the dominant pattern being anti-phase anomalies between the main Antarctic continent and the Antarct...
متن کاملEvolvable Hardware System at Extreme Low Temperatures
This paper describes circuit evolutionary experiments at extreme low temperatures, including the test of all system components at this extreme environment (EE). In addition to hardening-by-process and hardeningby-design, “hardening-by-reconfiguration ”, when applicable, could be used to mitigate drijts, degradation, or damage on electronic devices (chips) in EE, by using re-con$gurable devices ...
